PunchOut, PIM and e-commerce – a complete B2B solution with Shopspray

In today's B2B flows – especially in Sweden where both companies and the public sector have high demands for automation and data quality – a nice e-commerce frontend is not enough. To deliver a seamless and scalable PunchOut solution, three central components must work together: a PIM system, an e-commerce platform, and the customer's purchasing system.

Step 1: Collect and structure product data in PIM

The foundation for a successful solution lies in a well-organized PIM (Product Information Management). It serves as the hub for all product information – texts, images, specifications, pricing models, and catalog structure. A good PIM enables the management of different languages and markets, customer-specific assortments, and advanced filtering logic. It also creates connections to business systems to automatically retrieve inventory levels and master data.

Commonly used PIM solutions in Swedish B2B contexts are Litium PIM, Norce PIM, and Struct PIM – all well-suited for managing complex product data in larger organizations.

Step 2: Connect PIM and e-commerce to PunchOut with Shopspray

Once the data is structured and quality-checked, it doesn't just need to be presented correctly — it also needs to reach the right customer in the right system. That's where Shopspray comes in.

Shopspray isn't a standalone e-commerce platform, but a functionality that we at Toxic can add to the e-commerce projects we carry out. This means that all the business logic you've already built — such as order flows, customer logic, CRM integrations, PIM and backend integrations — can also be used in PunchOut orders.

For you as a B2B company, that means you can offer a customer-tailored store with accurate product data, assortment and pricing, while keeping your existing e-commerce solution. PunchOut is often a requirement in procurement processes or simply to do business with larger customers — and with Toxic and Shopspray, it becomes possible to connect your e-commerce directly to your customers' purchasing systems.

Step 3: PunchOut integration to the customer's purchasing system

Once the product data sits correctly in the PIM and the e-commerce solution is working as intended, Shopspray creates the direct connection to the customer's purchasing system.

The flow works like this:

  1. The customer logs in to their purchasing system.
  2. Via PunchOut, the user is linked directly to the supplier's e-commerce store.
  3. Shopspray ensures the store is automatically adapted with the right assortment, prices and product data for that customer.
  4. The user builds their cart, which is sent back to the purchasing system.
  5. The purchasing system then handles approval, invoice and order flow internally.

This is made possible through standards such as OCI (used by SAP and Visma Proceedo, for example), cXML (for systems like Ariba, Coupa and Oracle) and Peppol PunchOut, which is commonly used in the public sector and for compatibility within the EU.
