Kläppen Ski Resort
We at Toxic were entrusted to help Kläppen Ski Resort at a strategically important stage, where their existing web platform needed to be reviewed for the future. Kläppen's previous website was built in Episerver, with a license that expires in 2026. This created a clear need to find a new solution that was both sustainable in the long term and cost-effective.
About Kläppen
Kläppen Ski Resort is Sweden's largest family-owned ski facility and a well-known destination for skiing for the whole family. Here you can ski in all directions, Sälens longest illuminated slope, and a total of 37 kilometers of cross-country trails. With 41 slopes and 22 lifts, there is plenty of space to find your own favorites, regardless of level.
Kläppenberget took shape during the 1980s with a clear vision of creating a mountain where everyone can start from the top and where skiing works even when the weather changes. By preserving the forest around the slopes, a more sheltered and easy-to-ski mountain was created, where the trees contribute to better skiing conditions and a more pleasant experience. This fundamental idea still characterizes Kläppen today.
Background and choices
Before the decision, Kläppen conducted a feasibility study together with an external party where several CMS platforms were evaluated. The focus was on development opportunities, functionality, editor-friendliness, and infrastructure. After comparing Optimizely, Contentful, and Umbraco, the choice landed on Umbraco and Umbraco Cloud, which were assessed to provide the best overall solution based on both technical and business needs.
Once the CMS choice was made, a direct procurement was carried out where several suppliers were invited. Toxic submitted the strongest bid and was awarded the task of taking the project forward from strategy to implementation.
The assignment
Our mission was to develop a new web platform that enhances the entire guest journey, from inspiration and planning to booking and on-site experience. The work began with joint workshops where we, together with Kläppen, reviewed the content structure of the existing website. A strong focus was placed on creating a more logical and easy-to-navigate structure that makes it simple for visitors to find what they need, while also simplifying the editors' work.
At the same time, we worked on UX and design to create a clear, inspiring, and cohesive experience tailored to Kläppen's target audiences and business goals. An important part of the mission has also been to create a website that provides visitors with the right information at the right time, tailored to both the season and where they are in the guest journey. The solution should work equally well for guests who are already on-site in Kläppen as for those who are planning their visit.
I have been involved in many web projects over the years. Toxic stands out through effective and clear processes as well as a genuine commitment to the product, which leads to really good results. This has been the smoothest collaboration so far.
The solution
The new website is built in Umbraco and Umbraco Cloud, with clear technical requirements from Kläppen. A central part of the solution has been to create several natural pathways to booking accommodation and ski passes, as well as to present campaigns, events, and activities in a clear and easy-to-understand manner.
The website is designed to reflect Kläppen's seasonal changes and wide range of offerings. Visitors can easily access relevant information based on the season, with clear content for both winter and summer activities. For guests on-site, this means current information about, for example, slope status, weather, restaurants, and activities, while the planning phase is simplified through clear booking flows and consolidated information about accommodation, ski passes, and experiences.
The website also makes it easy to manage information about open slopes and cross-country trails, restaurants and menus, as well as to display current weather and temperature data both in the valley and at the top. The booking system is managed by an external party, which has required close collaboration to ensure smooth integrations and a cohesive design throughout the experience. At the same time, great importance has been placed on the editors' daily work, where the new solution provides better control over the content and makes it easier to update and further develop the website over time.
It has been incredibly inspiring to work on Kläppen's new website, not least thanks to the strong brand. The collaboration has worked very well and Lennart has been a brilliant counterpart with clear requirements, quick decisions, and fruitful discussions. We look forward to a long-term collaboration, both regarding the website and in Kläppen's other digital channels.
The collaboration
The collaboration between Kläppen and Toxic has been characterized by an open dialogue, shared priorities, and a high level of technical expertise on both sides. The close cooperation has created good conditions for making well-informed decisions and advancing the project in an efficient and structured manner.
